Winter on the Farm: Planning and Dreaming for the Season Ahead

Winter on a flower farm is quieter on the surface, but beneath that stillness, so much is beginning to take shape.
While the fields rest and the soil gathers strength for the months ahead, this season becomes a time for reflection, planning, and dreaming. It’s when we look back at what worked, what surprised us, and what we hope to grow differently in the coming year. The pace is slower, but the intention is just as strong.
A Season for Reflection
Winter gives us space to pause — something that’s often harder to do during the busy growing months. We think about last season’s blooms, the varieties that thrived, the ones that challenged us, and the lessons the garden offered along the way.
Farming has a way of teaching humility and patience. Every year is different, and every season brings new opportunities to learn.
Planning the Next Garden
This time of year is also when the dreaming begins in earnest.
We map out garden beds, plan where new dahlia varieties will live, and think about how to improve soil health and growing systems. Ordering supplies, organizing tubers, and preparing for propagation all happen during these colder months. It may not look as colorful as summer, but it’s just as important.
For us, growing dahlias starts long before anything is planted in the ground. It starts here — in notebooks, sketches, and hopeful anticipation.
Trusting the Rhythm of the Seasons
One of the most beautiful parts of farming is learning to trust the natural rhythm of the year. Winter isn’t a pause in progress; it’s a necessary chapter. Rest allows for renewal. Planning allows for growth.
Just like the garden, we move through cycles too — seasons of activity, seasons of waiting, and seasons of bloom.
Looking Ahead With Gratitude
As we prepare for the coming growing season, we feel gratitude for the opportunity to do this work and to share it with others. Whether you’re a gardener, a flower lover, or simply someone who enjoys watching things grow, you’re part of this journey with us.
Soon enough, the soil will warm, the first shoots will appear, and another season will begin.
Until then, we plan, we dream, and we trust what’s coming.
If this glimpse into winter on the farm resonates with you, we invite you to share it with a friend or fellow gardener. The more we share knowledge, inspiration, and the joy of growing, the more connected our communities become.
